Bueno esta es la primera vez despues de mi clase de COMTECH que estoy dispuesta a escribir algo en mi blogg fuera de lo que se ve en el aula de clases. Mi estancia en Suecia no ha podido ser mejor... este pais me ha recibido con las puertas abiertas, no tengo queja alguna. De hecho conforme pasa el tiempo y me doy cuenta de que debo regresar pronto a mi pais de origen (Mexico) hay un sentimiento que comienza a recorrer mi cuerpo entero, no se si llamarlo tristeza o melancolia. De hecho ni siquiera se el significado de esas dos palabras...el caso es que me he dado cuenta de lo fenomenal que ha sido vivir esta experiencia y de lo poco que quiero regresar a mi verdadera realidad. Porque si me pongo a pensar, esta no es ni tantito cercano a lo que es mi realidad. Es simplemente un sueno que comenzo en agosto y que esta por terminar en aproximadamente dos meses. Esta realidad onirica me ha encantado. Los paisajes que he visto, las personas que he conocido, mi forma y estilo de vida.... todo se ha complementado para dejarme un buen sabor de boca y muchas ganas de regresar a este pais. Un pais frio en clima, pero calido en otros aspectos (como los mencionados anteriormente). Hoy he decidido escribir aqui lo que siento y lo que pienso... no tengo idea de como me vaya a sentir despues de escribir estas palabras....esto de los blogs no se que tan funcional sea, estoy a punto de descubrirlo. Bueno y ademas de este sentimiento que invade mi cabeza en estos momentos, debo empezar a leer un par de articulos para el curso que estoy llevando, asi que dejare el resto para otra ocasion y me voy por el momento.

Boo Hoo: On the top of the World

What is Boo? was my first question when someone told me we had to read a book. Then after reading it I realize that Boo has being one of the most creative and well visioned ideas I've ever heard about. But that was it: an excellent idea that people on charde did not know how to manage. These "trio" definetely had global aspirations and they knew that the Internet was going to be their best tool to conquer the whole world. While reading the book I just started thinking about new bussinesses, but then I have to say that this first step (having an idea) is one of the most difficult ones. So then I just stoped thinking about creating my own bussiness and started to get more and more involved with the three main characters of this story. When the most important designers around the world thought that the web exposure would only cheapen their brands Malmsten and Leander came up with this brilliant idea of a web page called boo.com
So, the idea was there... after a while the money was there too... what was never there was a good organization and an efficient communication. And these two are fundamental parts for a bussiness to keep on growing and stay on the market. The problem was there even before the web page was launched, these "trio" was spending money that was not theirs (in first place), the worst thing was that they were not spending small amounts, but they were giving themselves a "king of the world's" life. They started to recruit people for their team, but they were looking for the most famous and professional people, in whom obviously they were already spending millions. By that time, the Internet was a great option to start a bussiness, especially if you were the first one to come up with an idea; that was not a long time ago but in this few years that have passed technology has gotten much better. So during 1999 the technology that every householder had could not support the quality of programs Malmsten and Leander decided to put in their web page.

Then after launching the we site in a huge party with Moet cups everywhere, they decided to spend even more money on their trips and luxury hotels, also clubbing and having expensive drinks every time they went out. When a bussiness has just taken off this are the kind of things that should not be done. So as I said on the beginning, the organization was one of the important things that led this company into bankruptcy. Financial issues have to be carefully taken care of, not just put aside because you think you are a billionaire capable of spending all the money you have after few months of starting your bussiness. But i repeat, this guys were spending millions even before having a bussiness set up.

Everything still makes me think this people were crazy, ambitious and arrogant. This book is a great lesson about hings you should not do when setting up a bussiness and immediately after. Really, it was interesting but drove me nuts for more than 2 times....just thinking....how can this people be doing this??? pretty annoying.... but anyways...a great book and a great dot com story. The "get rich... or dye trying" phrase that appears on the cover of my 50 cent cd applies perfectly for this story.

Hi! My name is Paulina and I am an exchange student at Jönköping University. I have been in Sweden for about one month and I have liked it a lot so far. I am from Mexico and I study communications, and I have one year left of school. I chose Sweden because I think it is just so different from what i am used to. Swedeish way of life is intersting and I am trying to adapt to it as much as I can, but there are just so many things that I am not used to. Sweden is an awesome country and I am just gonna try to learn out of it and its culture as much as I can in 5 months, that is the time that I am going to be here. This blog was created especially for my class of Communication Technology so we can add some comments about movies and stuff we are going to read during the course.

Triumph of the Nerds

I do not consider my self to be a big fan of computers, eventhough my whole life is related to them in a huge porcentage. Maybe I just do not realize how this IT bussiness has grown in a short amount of time and how important it is in our lives nowadays. Triumph of the Nerds is an amazing documentary, especially for someone like me that is not related with the history of computers at all. It realtes us the story of the computers and PC's since the very beginning. And it is just so astonishing to think how 40 years ago, probably nobody even had in their minds the idea what a personal computer would be. But now 30 years later, nobody can imagine a world withouth this compact but very complex instruments. This documentary is an interesting look to the past, especially when we are looking at those images from Sillicon Valley and the ones of the creators of these machines talking about their experience on those days (that would be unimaginable nowadays to get them all together) It must had been quite a task getting these innovators on camera. It is a masterpiece that presents the characters, places and anecdotes that are part of the birth of computers. On this documentary it's all there: software, hardware, geeks, nerds, money, power, ambition, anxiety.

There is no doubt that the PC revolution caught us all pretty much by surprise. And it is so interesting to see how this machines and innovations have changed our lives in a lot of ways. Robert Cringely should come up with an update, especially on these days in which every year technology develops in giant steps.
